When this report was being written the latest release of Fedora Core available was Fedora Core 6.

Choosing Fedora Core

Choosing the Linux distribution to use was always going to be a controversial decision.
Fedora Core 6 was chosen because it is widely used, recent, well supported and provides RPM packages for most of the applications tested here.

"Fedora Core is a free operating system that offers the best combination of stable and cutting-edge software that exists in the free software world."

Here are some of the core packages that come with an up to date version of Fedora Core 6 (as of 04-01-2007):
PackageVersion
kernel 2.6.18-1.2869
glibc 2.5-3
gcc 4.1.1-30
bash 3.1-16.1
openssh 4.3p2-14.fc6

Installation

Using the GUI installer, we select the smallest set of packages and only add openssh for remote maintenance.
